1934 Appalachia~
Even though she’s a grown woman, Juvie Blue lives her life firmly tucked beneath Jed Hatfield’s thumb. With an explosive temper fueled by rotgut whiskey, Daddy Jed is a volcano waiting to erupt. When he does, Juvie is often his target. Unable to stand up for herself, Juvie takes whatever Jed dishes out until one night, in a fit of rage, he goes too far. Driven to despair, Juvie leaves home without so much as a backward glance. Battered and beaten, she fights her way up the mountain, finally arriving in the tiny town of Mission where she rides out a blizzard in the Engler’s barn.
Feverish and trembling with cold, the Engler’s daughter finds Juvie and coaxes her into the house. Betty Engler, a kindhearted Christian woman, nurses the young woman back to health, but now there are whispers of lies and missing money. And Juvie isn’t talking.
Not only that, but Daddy Jed gets wind of Juvie’s whereabouts and he’s about to pay the Engler family a visit. Jed has a secret of his own, and a plan, but he needs Juvie to see it through, and he’ll stop at nothing to get her back.
While Betty has nothing but pity for Juvie’s plight, even she can’t deny there’s something wrong. The young woman is obviously hiding something. As Juvie’s behavior becomes more bizarre, she leaves them all to wonder, is she really a victim of abuse, or is her sad tale just a clever ruse to hide her own shameful secrets of the past?
