David Mounts: Living Life in a Sycamore Tree

Culture, History

A hundred years ago, towering Chestnut, Sassafras, and Sycamore trees dotted the mountains and flatlands of Eastern Kentucky.

David Mounts, an unconventional adventurer from Pike County, found refuge in one such tree, a majestic sycamore. That’s right. David lived in a sycamore tree.

At the time, most homes in Pike County were modest clapboard structures or small cabins, so David gained considerable attention for his unconventional choice of residence.

In true Appalachian fashion, David made do with what he had. When he needed a place to live, he found the old Sycamore tree growing near the mouth of Peter Creek. The inside of the tree was conveniently hollow, giving David plenty of room to live and sleep comfortably.

Living in a sycamore tree posed unique challenges, to be sure. Safety and stability were significant concerns. Additionally, the ever-changing nature of the tree required ongoing maintenance, such as trimming branches and protecting against invasive pests. Despite these challenges, Mounts embraced these as part of the adventure, learning valuable lessons along the way.

When David took a wife, she joined him in living in the tree, and eventually gave birth to their two sons there. One of their sons, Samuel, lived to be 112 years old.

To transform the tree into a family-sized habitat, David Mounts had to get creative. He carefully designed and equipped sleeping areas, a tiny kitchen, and even a small workspace. Mounts utilized space-saving techniques to make the most of the limited area, such as foldable furniture and clever storage solutions.

David Mounts was a man ahead of his time. He’d inadvertently created a sustainable living space and reduced his carbon footprint by harvesting solar power and rainwater. His decision to create a functional living space within the embrace of a majestic tree showcased his love for nature and his courage to live differently.

Despite the challenges, the benefits of David’s unconventional dwelling are undeniable. His lifestyle choices serve as a reminder that there are endless possibilities when it comes to harmonizing with our natural surroundings and embracing a sustainable way of life.
